B.L.E.S.S. (Serve)

Our new series, BLESS Your Heart, is based on the book B.L.E.S.S. by Dave and Jon Ferguson, which outlines five practical ways to love our neighbors and share our faith. This week, we “Serve Others.”

  1. Talk about a time when someone served you in a significant way.

  2. Describe a time when you had an opportunity to serve someone else in a way that was outside your comfort zone. What was this like?

  3. Is it easier for you to serve others, or to allow yourself to be served? Discuss.

    Read Mark 10:35-45.

  4. While we often give the disciples a hard time, do you identify with James and John at all here? In what ways?

  5. How do we misunderstand the relationship Jesus wants us to have with power and with serving another? How does Jesus answer this question for us through his example?

    Read Mark 10:37-39 again.

  6. In his sermon and the podcast, Jarm says the cup Jesus and his disciples will drink is a cup of suffering. What role does suffering play in your ability to serve others?

  7. Why do you think James and John are so quick to answer that they can drink the cup Jesus will drink and share in his baptism? How would you answer this question?

    Read John 13:1-17.

  8. Why do you think Jesus chose to wash his disciples’ feet before his crucifixion? How would you have felt if you were there? What can we learn about serving from Jesus's actions here?

Conclude your time by reflecting on Mark 10:42-45.

  9. Where in your life could your posture shift into servant mode? Who can you focus on serving this week?

If nobody comes to mind, pray for God to place the people He wants you to serve in front of you this week and to prepare your heart for service.

Some questions above appeared first in the book B.L.E.S.S. by Dave and Jon Ferguson.
