Hazmat (Week 4)
This week we will explore the role of the “third Person of the Trinity”—the Holy Spirit—in the process of sanctification.
1.What is your understanding of the Holy Spirit? If you were raised going to church, how was the Holy Spirit explained or taught? If not, what were your first impressions of the Holy Spirit once you began going to church?
2. Have you noticed that the Holy Spirit tends to get over-emphasized (in comparison to God the Father and Jesus Christ the Son) in some Christian circles and denominations, and virtually ignored in others? Why do you think this is the case?
Read John 14:15-27.
3. What names did Jesus give to the Holy Spirit in this passage (see v.16-17, 26)? What do these names tell you about the Holy Spirit and his role in our lives as followers of Christ?
4. Talk about how you have experienced the Holy Spirit as an Advocate and/or the Spirit of truth in your life.
In his sermon, Pete noted that the Holy Spirit “equips us” to escape from the prison of sin, “reveals” the Way of Jesus, and “restores” our true identity in Christ.
5. Which of these three stand out to you personally as most impactful? Is there one that requires a bit more unpacking for you? Discuss.
6.In the Primer Podcast video, Pete and Jessica talked about the role of the Holy Spirit in interpreting scripture for us. We often talk about the Bible as being written through the Holy Spirit, but talk about what it would look like to read the Bible through that same living Spirit.
In your group, discuss some ways you can become more open to the work of the Holy Spirit in your life.
For Further Reflection: Reading Scripture through the Spirit
This week, set aside some time to prayerfully read the verses below. Before reading, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to a deeper understanding of this verse, allowing it to move from your mind to your heart.
Ask God, through the Holy Spirit, to fill you with the peace promised here by Jesus Christ. Look for ways to apply this practice with other scripture as well.
“The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
