Invited: Shepherds

Week 4 Group Study Questions

Read Luke 2:8-20, imagining yourself as an observer of the events described, then spend some time reflecting on and discussing the following prompts.

  1. Shepherding was an important, ancient occupation, but many historians believe that by Jesus’ time, shepherds were seen as rough, dangerous outcasts. Why does God seem to favor “outcasts”? What does this say about God? What does this say about us?

  2. The shepherds whom God first invited to share the news of Jesus’ birth would have smelled of campfire, sweat, and animals when they burst in to see the Christ child, which was probably quite a shock to Mary and Joseph! How (and when) has God used unexpected people or moments in your life to invite you into a deeper relationship with Him?

  3. In his message, Pete talked about how God chose the shepherds despite their fear, shortcomings, and insecurity. In what ways do you identify with the shepherds?

  4. Do you truly believe that God chooses imperfect, fearful people to work through? Why might this be the case? How does this impact the ways in which you think about God’s call on your life?
