Who Am I? “Light of the World”

Week 1 Group Study Questions

1. Do you usually make New Year’s resolutions? Did you make any this year? If so, share some of your resolutions (past or current). What have your experiences in keeping resolutions been like?

2. This series focuses on identity. Our sense of identity is deeply tied to our values and choices, but it’s something we don’t always see or think about. How would you describe your identity? From what sources do you draw your identity?

3. Our search for identity is closely tied to our search for meaning. What are some things that currently give your life meaning? What would happen if some of those things were taken away? Are there any sources of meaning that cannot be taken away? What is our most essential identity?

4. Modern society and culture seems to teach us that we can make up our own identity or find our own meaning. What kind of tension do you feel between this way of thinking and your faith?

5. Read John 8:12-20. From where does Jesus draw his identity? What does it look like, as followers of Jesus, to find our identity and meaning in Christ? How can you encourage each other to resist the pressure of the world to create your own identity, and instead find it in Jesus?
