Journey Together Like Jesus

Pete Stearns | February 13, 2022

We continue examining what’s important to St. Mark’s Community Church by looking at our value of journeying together like Jesus, through Mark chapters 9 and 10. Together, we’ll pay attention to the ways in which we can encourage each other as we seek to walk alongside those not yet following Christ.

Notes and Scripture

We Journey Together Like Jesus: Saint Mark’s Community Church is a community where people are encouraged and equipped to follow Jesus and walk alongside those not yet following Him.

Mark 9:30-34

People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.

Mark 10:13-16

Mark 10:23-27

The Four Walls We Build to “Protect” Jesus

-Power – Jesus invites the Children (Mark 10:13-16)

-Purity – Woman Caught in Adultery (John 8:1-20)

-Politics – Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s (Mark 12:13-17)

-Prejudice – The Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37)

Mark 9:42-47

Going Deeper: Scripture Reflection

This week, spend some time focusing on this passage from Psalm 139. You may want to read this entire psalm of David, asking God to open the eyes of your heart in prayer.

Search me, O God, and know my heart;

Try me and know my thoughts.

And see if there be any grievous way in me,

and lead me in the way everlasting.

Psalm 139:23-24

Allow yourself some space and time to reflect on the following:

Of the four walls we often build in an attempt to to “protect Jesus from the unworthy,” which one do you find yourself most tempted to put up? (Power | Purity | Politics | Prejudice)

“Saint Mark’s Community Church is a community where people are encouraged and equipped to follow Jesus and walk alongside those not yet following Him.”

When you read the value above, what do you think and feel? Prayerfully ask God to show you ways to encourage and equip other, and to walk alongside those not yet following Jesus.
