Simple Living: “Presence”

This series will focus on themes like simplicity, presence, surrender, and gratitude in the re-ordering or our priorities as we seek to live a simpler, more generous life.

1.Discontentment is believing the myth that we always need more. What is the “more” that you find yourself seeking? How does this drive discontentment?

2. Read Philippians 4:11-13 from The Message and reflect on the radical nature of Paul’s contentment. What is his “recipe for being happy” regardless of circumstance? How is this “recipe” accessible to you too?

3. Talk about a time when you possessed less than you do now. In a spiritual sense, did you feel freer then? If so, discuss why you think this was the case.

4. What fears do you have (if any) when it comes to generosity? How does this relate to contentedness?

5. Read Philippians 4:12-13 again. How does verse 12 give necessary context to verse 13, which is often misused?

6. Read Philippians 4:5-6. How is God’s presence (verse 5) the key to not being anxious (verse 6)?

7. The following quote by Gordon Fee was in Pete’s sermon: "When we thank God in all things (not for all things), we are declaring our dependence on Him." How is thanking God in all things different from thanking God for all things?

8. Discuss how being dependent on God is actually true freedom.

Contentment - Practicing the Presence

1. Remember that God is always present

2. Reconnect to Him through Prayer

3. Recognize His presence in every circumstance

9. To close, discuss the three points above and the connection between contentment and receiving God’s presence.
