The Power of Influence

We hope this guide will help you take the good news you hear today into your daily lives.

Notes and Scripture

You were made to influence the world in a way that no one else can.

“The drive to significance is a simple extension of the creative impulse of God…. It is outwardly directed to the good to be done.  We were built to count, as water is made to run downhill.  We are placed in a specific context to count in ways no one else does.  That is our destiny.” -Dallas Willard

Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don’t be impressed with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life.

Galatians 6:4-5 (The Message)

1. Make a careful exploration of who you are.

(John 10:14)

2. Make a careful exploration of the work you have been given.

(Ephesians 2:10)

3. SINK yourself into that.

(Philippians 1:12-14)

4. Don’t be impressed with yourself.  Don’t compare yourself with others.

5. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life.

Two Practices for Going Deeper

As we try to discern how we can influence those around us, it’s important to listen to God’s voice, reflecting on who God says we are and what is “ours to do.” To help you do this, try one or both of the following practices this week.

Listening Prayer

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—” (John 10:14)

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27)

Listening prayer helps us quiet the inner and outer noise so that we can open our hearts and listen for God’s voice. In this practice, God sets the agenda for our prayer, and we simply respond to the word that is given.

We can spend much of our prayer time talking to God, but this week take some time to listen to what God has to say to you—through a favorite scripture passage, or a time of silence.    (The Spiritual Disciplines Handbook)

Journaling

Make a careful exploration of who you are... Galatians 6:4 (The Message)

Journaling is a tool for reflecting on God’s presence and guidance in our daily lives. Through writing, we can better tune into God’s activity in, around, and through us—and we can carefully explore who God says we are. (The Spiritual Disciplines Handbook)
