Nick Jordan | October 2, 2022

We created this study guide to spark thought, discussion, and prayer among community groups and study groups. We hope that your time together is enriched.

Group Discussion Questions

1. If you could eat one food for the rest of your life what would it be? (Everyone share)

 2. Which of these negative views of the Bible have you experienced?

a. confusing - not relevant - outdated
b. condemning - not grace filled - weaponized
c. constricting - not life giving - rule book

 3. How has this series changed your views on reading the Bible?

 4. Brainstorm and discuss ways you can “consume” God’s word on a regular basis.

 5. In your life, what verse(s) or truth found in the Bible, have given life in challenging circumstances. If you need to, take some time to look through your Bibles to find something to share.

For Further Discussion (from this week’s paper Sunday Guide)

In his book In The Name of Jesus, Henri Nouwen applies some of the temptations of Jesus in Matthew 4 to temptations we all face in our lives. Take some time to reflect on each in your life, and discuss with your group.

The Temptation To Be Relevant

The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:3-4 (NIV)

How can we rely on God’s power, and not our own, in our daily lives?

The Temptation To Be Spectacular

In Matthew 4: 5-7, Jesus is tempted to prove he is the Son of God by throwing himself off the temple and having angels rescue him. Jesus responds by quoting from Deuteronomy: “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

How can we allow scripture, and not our need to be noticed, to guide the way we interact in the world?
