Who Am I? “The Way, the Truth, & the Life”
Week 3 Group Study Questions
1. In his message, Fil said "there is no deep knowing of God without a deep knowing of self, and no deep knowing of ourselves without a deep knowing of God." This is a profound truth, but a difficult one to fully grasp or live out. What do you think about the connection between knowing ourselves and knowing God?
2. When we think about the question “Who am I?”, we often focus on what we do, what we have, or what others think about us. Is there one of these three things you mistake for yourself more than the others? How does this way of thinking limit your freedom?
3. Read Matthew 14:27-31 and John 13:36-38 How are you like Peter, trusting in yourself more than in Jesus? How does this demonstrate a lack of self-knowledge—in Peter’s case and in yours? How did this work out for Peter? How is it working out for you?
4. What are some ways you have grown in self-knowledge during the course of your life? How has failure played a part in your growth? How has this growth impacted your relationship with God?
5. Fil said that “Jesus is the truth that challenges the lies we want to believe.” What are some lies you would prefer to believe? How does Jesus—the truth—challenge those lies for your own good?
6. In the sermon Fil said, “Too many people have reduced the way of Jesus to the route to heaven, which He certainly is. But there's so much more.” How does the idea of living out our salvation here and now impact your decisions, actions, and outlook on life?
7. Reflect on the quote from Gandhi: “I like your Christ, but I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” What do you make of this? How can you help and encourage each other in living a life that reflects Jesus Christ?
