Who Am I? “The Resurrection and the Life”
Week 6 Group Study Questions
Read the passage telling the story of Jesus and the resurrection of Lazarus in John 11: 1-45. With this story in mind, discuss the following questions or prompts.
When Jesus arrives four days after Lazarus’ death, his sister Martha essentially says in verse 22 that she still trusts Jesus. Have you ever been in a similar position? How has your faith remained strong in the midst of loss or pain? How have you struggled with this?
Shortly after, in verse 25, Jesus says, “I am the resurrection and the life.” What does this statement means in your life? How does Jesus go beyond physical healing in the story? What does this mean for you?
Think back to Pete's statement from the sermon that "if we identify Jesus as 'the healer', then we deny Jesus as the Resurrection." Do you agree with this statement, or not? Does this challenge your assumptions about Jesus? How?
Throughout scripture, Jesus is referred to as “Good Teacher” by those who know him well, and those who do not. This is not an incorrect title, but it is incomplete. Jesus himself tells us he is “the life.” In his sermon, Pete said that "if we simply know Jesus as “Good Teacher”, then we deny him as “the life". Discuss what this means to you, along with any challenges you may have.
If Jesus is not just another teacher of morality, but life itself, how does this free you to live life to the fullest—in Him who is “the life”?
In prayer, ask God to show you how to live with the freedom found only in Christ, for the strength to do so, and for community in which to do it.
